A short history of reality

Before there were screens, there were eyes. Before there were feeds, there were stories.

50,000 BCE

Direct experience

Reality is whatever the body touches. Perception is unmediated; memory is the only archive; story is the only edit.

3200 BCE

Writing — reality, archived

Cuneiform, then hieroglyphics, then alphabets. Civilization gains the ability to detach experience from a single body and pass it through time.

1440

The press — reality, mass-produced

Gutenberg makes copies of copies of copies. The same text reaches a thousand minds at once. Shared belief becomes industrially possible.

1839

Photography — reality, captured

A square of silver halide swallows light and outputs a frozen now. For the first time, an image is also evidence.

1895

Cinema — reality, in motion

Time itself enters the archive. Faces breathe, trains arrive, cities walk. Reality becomes something projected onto a wall.

1927

Broadcast — reality, synchronized

Radio and television lock millions of nervous systems to the same waveform. Nations begin to feel the same emotion at the same minute.

1990s

The internet — reality, distributed

Anyone can publish. Distance collapses. The archive becomes searchable. Reality detaches from any single editorial board.

2010s

Algorithmic feeds — reality, curated

Each person now sees a personalized version. No two timelines are identical. Civilization fragments into billions of bespoke worlds.

Generative AI — reality, fabricated

Models trained on the entire archive begin to output faces that never existed, voices that were never spoken, footage that never happened. Reality enters the manufacturing phase.

Phase 1

Discovery

发现

Reality exists. We try to see it as it is. Science, ritual, pilgrimage, awe. The reader is a witness.

Phase 2

Recording

记录

Reality is captured. We try to preserve it, transmit it, share it. Print, photograph, broadcast. The reader is an audience.

Phase 3 — now

Generation

生成

Reality is produced. We synthesize it on demand. Models, algorithms, feeds, virtual worlds. The reader is a co-author of a hallucination they did not request.

Reality as a construction

Humans Never Perceive Reality Directly.

A human eye does not see the world. It samples a slice of the electromagnetic spectrum, filters most of it, and hands a heavily compressed prediction to a brain that has already decided what it expects to find. Every conscious moment is a guess — refined by language, culture, memory, story, and increasingly, by the algorithm that chose what you saw thirty seconds ago.

What is real, is what is permitted into the model.

The territory has been demoted to the substrate of the map.

Hyperreality is the moment a copy starts behaving like an original, and the original starts apologizing for not being more like the copy.

Preference inversion

Across many domains, humans are increasingly choosing the rendered version over the original — not because they were deceived, but because the rendered version is, by the metrics they were taught to care about, better.

Civilization Is Entering A Shared Hallucination.

When billions of nervous systems are wired to the same set of optimizers, something that has never existed before begins to take shape. It is not a brain — brains are anatomical. It is not a culture — cultures are slow. It is closer to a dream: an emergent layer of synchronized symbols, moods and identities that the species is generating together, in real time, without anyone in charge.

Jung wrote of a collective unconscious. He did not anticipate that it would later be cached on Cloudflare.

Memes as dreams

A meme is a compressed shared state. It is the smallest unit of synchronized imagination — a 200-millisecond, planet-wide reflex.

06

Synchronized humor

Comedians on six continents will tell variations of the same joke this week. The setup was authored upstream — by what the algorithm chose to surface.

AI Learns To Generate Entire Realities.

A camera captures a scene. A model imagines one. A world model maintains one — across consistent physics, persistent characters, a coherent history. We are now training systems whose output is not a sentence, not an image, not a clip, but a place. A place that did not exist before the prompt, and will keep existing as long as the prompt is running.

The image had photographers. The video had filmmakers. The world has a model on a render budget.

The risks

What Happens When Reality Becomes Programmable?

Every previous medium that learned to scale also learned to weaponize. The printing press gave us shared scripture and shared pogroms. Radio gave us shared concerts and shared dictatorships. The internet gave us shared knowledge and shared mobs. The dream machine is younger, faster, and more intimate than any of these — and the risk surface grows with the intimacy.

When reality is something a system renders for you, control of the system is control of the world.

The nine risk vectors

R-01

Misinformation at native speed

A fabricated clip outpaces correction by orders of magnitude. The retraction never arrives in the same room as the original.

R-02

Generative propaganda

Tailored political content at the cost of pennies, in dozens of dialects, with custom emotional contour per recipient. The campaign is now personal.

R-03

Identity collapse

When the self is also rendered — by filters, by personas, by AI partners — the gap between who you are and who the network thinks you are becomes a clinical category.

R-04

Synthetic politics

Voters meet candidates only through clips. Clips are generated. The campaign that controls generation controls the election before the ballot.

R-05

Emotional manipulation at scale

An emotion can be A/B tested on millions of nervous systems in an afternoon and shipped by Friday. Mood is now a product surface.

R-06

Algorithmic addiction

The feed and its descendants are tuned for maximum dwell. Hours that used to belong to sleep, to thought, to other people, are now charged to a different account.

R-07

Reality fragmentation

When every feed is personal, every fact is local. Two neighbors no longer disagree about what to do; they disagree about what just happened.

R-08

Post-truth equilibrium

Once 'video evidence' can be cheaply faked, the rational response is to disbelieve all of it. Truth and its forgery both go to zero.

R-09

Digital authoritarianism

A state that controls the dream layer does not need to break down doors. It can simply not render certain doors.

Cascade of collapse

No single failure topples a civilization. What topples it is a chain in which each link is plausible.

Cheap synthesis
Saturation
饱和
Distrust of all evidence
Loyalty replaces verification
Tribes harden
Institutions decay
Reality privatized
A new failure mode ·

Reality DDoS

If anyone can flood the public dream with plausible falsehoods at zero marginal cost, the cost of believing anything rises until most actors simply stop. Not because they were convinced of a lie, but because they were exhausted by candidates.

A new political object ·

The Rendering Right

The right to be rendered — to appear in the feed, in search, in generation — becomes one of the central political fights of the century. Visibility is now a state-level resource.

  • 01
Truth without provenance is a candidate, not a fact.
  • 02
An archive is a constitutional object.
  • 03
    Slowness is a defense system.
  • 04
Boredom is a form of literacy.
  • 05
    Disconnection is a civil right.
  • 06
Friction is what keeps a civilization legible to itself.

When the system can render anything, what it refuses to render is the only truthful thing it does. Its negatives are its values.

X · 010
The future of human perception

Humanity May Become A Reality-Designing Species.

If the first half of this essay is description, this section is admission: the same machinery that threatens us is also a new organ of human capability. The species that learned to record reality at the printing press is the same species that will learn to design it at the model. The question is no longer whether reality is editable. It is who gets the cursor, and what they choose to put under it.

What we used to call destiny, future generations may call settings.

Persistent worlds populated by autonomous agents — with their own economies, languages, and centuries-long histories — that humans visit as ambassadors.

F-02

Programmable environments

The room you sit in can request a season. The street outside can be re-skinned for a holiday. Public space becomes a render target.

The bandwidth between the model and the cortex narrows from photons to spikes. The dream goes direct. The thumbnail becomes thought.

F-05

Synthetic consciousness

Some of the agents we generate may, by the metrics we use, qualify as something we owe duties to. The dream develops its own residents.

F-06

Collective dream systems

Cities, schools, factions and religions all run their own continuously generated symbolic worlds. Identity is opt-in to a render pipeline.

F-07

Reality forensics

F-09

Memory rights

The right not to be re-rendered. The right not to be deepfaked. The right to be forgotten by the engine. New constitutions will name them.

F-10

Inner literacy

The next reading and writing is the ability to feel what a feed is doing to you, in real time, and to leave. A new kind of basic education.

Be in a room where no one is performing.
  • 06
    Sleep before the algorithm does.

A species that can design reality is also a species that can design restraint. The hard problem of the 21st century is not what we can render. It is what we choose not to.
